A smile.  A raised hand.  A laugh.  A question. A thank you.  This is what school volunteers experience every day in the Bridgeport Public Schools.  They may see a child become intrigued, learn something new or set an admirable goal. Each volunteer makes a difference in the child’s life.  This is our purpose and the reason why so many individuals, businesses and organizations become involved with SVA.  Working together, we are creating a brighter future for Bridgeport’s children.

Volunteer Programs

Reading Enrichment:  Volunteers read aloud to pre-kindergarten through sixth grades classes, using books provided by the School Volunteer Association.  After reading each book, volunteers are encouraged to discuss the book with the class and then donate it to the classroom library.  The time commitment is about thirty minutes either monthly, bi-weekly or weekly.  Please contact the School Volunteer Office to get started.

Book Buddies:
Volunteers listen to young children read books to them, giving help as needed.  Volunteers spend about fifteen minutes per child and may make this their primary volunteer position or combine it with reading enrichment.  Please contact the School Volunteer Office to get started.

Reading or Math Tutors:  Volunteers work one-on-one or with small groups of elementary and middle school students under the guidance of the teachers who provide directions and materials to reinforce skills.  Books and supplies are provided by SVA to support the tutors with their work.  Volunteers should fill out this tutor application prior to placement.

Mentors:  Adults are paired with individual children with the goal of being consistent, caring adults in the children’s lives. They meet at school one hour weekly to talk, work on school work or projects or play games.  New mentors should fill out this mentor application and attend a two hour workshop to learn tips and strategies to help them in their work.

Business, School and Community Partnerships Program:  Businesses, service organizations, religious groups and other agencies may partner with individual schools to provide volunteers, work on projects or donate resources.  Please contact the School Volunteer Office to discuss the possibilities and your interests.
